Viewers have seen how they do things in FOX's fictionalized version of Orange County, but MTV is about to welcome fans to "Laguna Beach -- The Real Orange County." On Monday (June 28), the network announced that the show, described as television's first "reality drama," will premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

"Laguna Beach" looks at the privileged lives of seven attractive teens who have been friends since they were kids. Stephen, Kristen, Lauren (LC), Lo, Christina, Trey and Morgan have given MTV full access to their lives outside of school as they go through the normal rites of passage associated with being rich, attractive and having to take SAT prep courses.

The difference, MTV explains, is that "Laguna Beach" will have "the look and feel of a scripted drama, without the conventions of reality television." That means no confessionals and interviews, but also no script.

"MTV is all about reinvention, breaking new ground and staying on the cutting edge of television and with 'Laguna Beach,' we will explore a whole new genre - the 'reality drama,'" says Tony DiSanto, senior vice president of production for MTV. "Our goal is to show the lives of this incredible group of teenagers -- authentic and unscripted -- yet shot look like our viewers' favorite dramatic series. It will be a unique viewing experience, unlike anything else on television, and all the more compelling because the drama is real."

Back in February, in the immediate aftermath of the Janet Jackson Super Bowl debacle, Laguna Beach Unified School District Board voted to deny MTV permission to shoot on school grounds, but an MTV spokesperson says that the series was able to go forward shooting entirely outside of the school environs.

Liz Gateley created "Laguna Beach" for MTV and executive produces along with Gary Auerbach and DiSanto.
